Stay Strong Through the Holidays-Simple Tips for Fitness and Joy

NOSSK Staying Fit During the Holidays - Christmas Meal

As we are thick into the Holiday and Christmas Season, with all the celebrations, company parties, turkey dinners, cakes, hot chocolates, brownies, and pies around, it can be challenging to stick to your Fitness Routine. With no end to food and little time to fit in a workout, it can be difficult during these times to find ways to stay fit.

At NOSSK, we believe that even amid all the Holiday Festivities, it is possible to find a balance where Fitness is not compromised.

Here's how:

1. KEEP IN MIND THAT EVEN A LITTLE BIT COUNTS

Remember that long-term, meaningful fitness is not about perfection -  it's about consistency. When we are talking about consistency, even a little bit counts. During the busyness of the holidays, even if you only have 10 or 15 minutes, use it to get in a mini NOSSK workout. Because these days are usually filled with shopping, traveling and visiting with others, we can be tempted to skip out completely on our daily workout. However, the key to staying fit during the Holidays is making sure that you remember that you can stick to your routine, even if you don’t have the time to commit to it 100%. That means that perhaps instead of an hour workout, you might have to cut it down some days to a few minutes a day.

Quick bodyweight circuits, a quick walk around the neighborhood or office on your lunch break, resistance training, or even stretching can keep you energized. The key is to remember that any movement, no matter how little, counts. Suspension Fitness trainers  like NOSSK Trainers are  light and portable and can be anchored almost anywhere. They can be the perfect secret weapon to keep you fit during the busy Holiday season.

 2. COMBINE HOLIDAY DUTIES WITH FITNESS

If you think about it, during the Holiday season there are many things that you might have to commit to outside of your regular daily routine that you can replace for regimented workout time. If you incorporate these tasks into your fitness routine, you might be surprised to find that they help you to stay consistent to maintain your fitness goals. For example, you can incorporate Fitness into the rhythm of the Holiday season by staying active while you take care of Holiday chores. A great way to do this is to make sure that whether hanging Christmas lights, dancing to holiday tunes, decorating, or taking a family walk after a big meal, you use these opportunities to keep moving and stay active. Instead of taking everything you need up that ladder to hang and take down those Christmas lights this year, allow yourself to get a good ladder climbing workout by forcing yourself to go up and down the ladder several times to retrieve your supplies. After a few minutes going up and down the ladder, you will definitely be feeling the burn.

Another great way to combine Holiday duties with fitness this year, is instead of buying all of the gifts on your Christmas list online, choose instead to head out to the store. This way, not only your fingers will get a good workout, but your entire body. The extra energy you expend walking through the mall will be a great way to burn extra calories during the Holiday season and get your heart pumping. Not to mention that it will be a great way to get some fresh air.

Additionally, when headed to the store to buy gifts for your loved ones, or to return unwanted gifts after the Holidays, choose to park your car as far away from your desired destination to force yourself to have to walk the extra few minutes and get in a mini workout as you buy and return Holiday gifts.

 3.EAT MINDFULLY WITHOUT GUILT

Let’s be honest, we all like to indulge a little during the Holiday season, and guess what? That is totally fine and understandable. As you spend time with friends and loved ones during this season, we encourage you to savor your Holiday favorites without the guilt trip.

However, this is not the time to abandon common sense when it comes to listening to your body’s natural signals. As you focus on enjoying your meals, make sure to also listen to your hunger cues and your body's cue that signals when enough is enough. Make sure to balance indulgent dishes with nourishing options.

Continue to strive to get your daily intake of fruits and vegetables even as you indulge in Holiday sweets and pastries. A good way to do this is to choose to pair your meal with a green salad, and when it comes to desserts, choose a fruit-based dessert such as a fruit tart. Remember that when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet and one's overall health and Fitness, it's more about finding a healthy balance than complete restriction.

 4. SET NEW GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

The end of the year is a perfect time for reflection and planning. Think about your fitness goals for the coming year and how you can achieve them. You don’t have to wait until New Year to begin thinking about your goals and vision for the New Year. When you begin focusing on setting new goals for the New Year as you are going through the Holiday season, it will help keep you more accountable and mindful of your food choices, your daily fitness routine, even in a season of indulgence. So, whether your goal is to improve strength, mobility, or endurance, beginning to set and focus your mind on these goals during the Holiday season already will motivate you to stay active and help you to end your year strong.

5. CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY

Many studies have shown that connection with others has a huge positive impact on Health and Fitness. One of the most powerful motivators in Fitness is belonging. As a family-run business, we at NOSSK know how important connection and relationship are to the success of health and fitness and life in general.
